The present times are highly influenced by data. Every organization is dependent on deep insights conveyed by data to form meaningful decisions and promote business growth. When you have access to the right data and the right tools to process and analyze that data, you make educated and informed decisions. It is important that the collected data is precise, relevant, and taken in context so that it does not have a negative impact on a business. This is attained with the help of data collection services.

The process of gathering and measuring data from multiple sources, such that it allows you to discover answers to real questions and receive new insights, is known as data collection. The detailed assessment of collected data can help in analyzing current trends and predicting future trends.

Why Do You Need to Collect Data?

There is far more data available today than it was a few years ago and it exists in multiple formats. With time, the data collection process has changed and grown, keeping pace with technology. Regardless of the field you work in, be it academia or commercial, you need data collection solutions to make critical business decisions.

Here are some important reasons that make data collection important:

  • It helps you understand your customers better and improve customer relationships
  • You can analyze trends better and know how the behavior and opinions of customers change with time
  • You can focus your time and energy on the relevant information to generate the maximum impact
  • Data collection helps you segment your audiences and develop customized marketing strategies for different segments
  • Feedback data helps you in resolving issues that improve your products/services

Different Methods of Data Collection

The two important methods of data collection are Primary Data Collection and Secondary Data Collection. Let’s understand these:

Primary

The primary method of data collection refers to the first-hand, original data collected by researchers. The process is the foremost information-gathering step that is carried out before performing any related or further research. The results of primary data collection are quite accurate, provided the information is collected by the researcher. This research methodology is, however, expensive and time-consuming.

Secondary

Secondary data collection includes second-hand data gathered by other parties, wherein the data has already undergone statistical analysis. The data includes information that the researcher has asked other people to collect or information that the researcher has looked up themselves. Compared to primary data, secondary data is cheaper and easier to obtain, but it raises concerns regarding credibility and accuracy. Secondary data majorly includes quantitative data.

Specific Techniques of Data Collection

Let’s break down the particular techniques of data collection:

Primary Data Collection

  • Interviews: In interviews, the researcher asks questions of a large sampling of people, either by means of phone/mail or via interviews. This is one of the most common data collection solutions.
  • Projective Data Gathering: This method is used to reveal the inner feelings of a respondent when a direct question is not appropriate or the true purpose of a study can’t be revealed. The methods utilized for this kind of data gathering are unstructured and open-ended. These can include sentence completion or picture interpretation.
  • Focus Groups: Just like interviews, focus groups are also a commonly used technique for data collection. A focus group is led by a moderator and consists of half a dozen to dozen people, brought together to discuss a particular issue.
  • Questionnaires: They account for a straightforward method of data collection wherein respondents get a series of questions related to the concerned matter. The questions can be either open-ended or closed-ended.
  • Delphi Technique: In this technique, researchers gather information from a panel of experts. Questions are answered by experts in their area of specialty and the responses are collected to form a unique opinion.

Secondary Data Collection

There are no particular collection methods for secondary data collection since the information has already been collected during the primary data collection process. For secondary purposes, the researcher consults multiple data sources, such as the following:

  • Sales reports
  • Business journals
  • Government records
  • The Internet
  • Retailer feedback
  • Personal information of customers
  • Business magazines

How to Select a Data Collection Service For Your Business?

The data needs of every company are different from the others. Thus, it can be challenging to choose the right data collection service that meets your requirements. Here are some important factors you need to consider while deciding to work with a data collection company:

Data requirements of your project

You need to consider the scope of your project and the features the required data should cover. This will let you know if your potential data collection company can meet the requirements. For example, if your project needs sentiment analysis data, not many companies provide it, so you can filter out the companies that don’t provide this kind of data collection.

Level of diversity the dataset needs to have

To understand this, you need to consider the size of the crowd offered by the company, the languages they cover, and the number of countries the crowd is situated in. If you need the dataset in a particular language, a service provider with data collectors in that country can provide more precise data. You also need to consider the number of global markets that are covered by the service provider. In certain markets, service providers are required to have domain-specific knowledge.

Cost of the data service

The prices of data collection services vary from company to company. A lot of vendors don’t provide specific pricing information. Nevertheless, they do provide information concerning their pricing packages, their pricing model, and their own charges.

Data collection methods used by the company

Ensure that your chosen service provider provides the data collection methods you need. In case your project needs a large dataset in varied languages, a company that works with a crowdsourcing model would be more suited to your needs. Knowing about the data collection methods of your potential company can help you filter out the services that don’t follow your required methods. This way you can ensure more accurate data for your project.

Additional services that complement your project

In case your project needs additional services such as data preprocessing or annotation, you can filter out the data collection companies that do not provide these services.

Conclusion

The different methods of data collection can provide important insight for forming well-researched business decisions. Based on the method of collection, some data collection types can provide you with more accurate results compared to others. Understanding the best kind of collection method for your business needs can help you achieve relevant and useful results.

Data collection is no longer a one-time affair. Collecting data has become a prerequisite for organizations that need to make reliable and informed decisions. It helps you know what your customers think about your business or brand, helps generate leads, highlights the areas that need improvement, and allows you to update your products/services as per the latest consumer trends and behavior. If you want your company to reach its goals more effectively, then data collection services need to be on your list.
