GPT-3 is the third generation Generative Pre-trained Transformer machine learning model that was developed by OpenAI and released in November 2021. It is a deep learning neural network with well over 175 billion machine learning parameters. Wait… but what does this all mean? GPT-3 is a major game changer in the way that artificial intelligence produces written text. It’s the closest AI has ever been to mimicking a human being. GPT-3 is the latest and absolute best AI generated text that sounds like a human being could have drafted it. So, it’s like your best friend who tends to finish all of your sentences AND actually says exactly what you intended to say! In so many words, GPT-3 is the best thing in AI since… well… since AI!

Machine learning is an application of artificial intelligence that allows systems to learn without being explicitly programmed. It is the development of programs that can access data and information from a number of sources and use this collectively to learn for itself. The same way a baby learns a new language, machine learning relies on data sets and training or knowledge inputs to learn and understand how connections are made to start the deep learning process. Deep learning uses neural networks just like the human brain, where information is transferred through inputs and outputs between neurons. Amazing!

In order for machines to learn, it has to start with direct experience, information, data or instructions. Then, patterns and inferences are made based on the information provided. This allows the computers and AI to then begin to process information in an autonomous way without any help from humans. In the case of GPT-3, with over 175 billion machine learning parameters — which includes an algorithm based on 45 terabytes of text data — it is the largest trained learning model ever developed (its predecessor only had 17 billion parameters) and is convincing enough to sound like a human being may have written the text. It is a very sophisticated text predictor!
GPT-3 is the most powerful language model. It uses all of the text that has been published on the internet and extracts the patterns and makes connections to produce reasonable responses. When drafting an email, GPT-3 has the capacity to complete the email as if a human being wrote it. AND that’s pretty cool!
There are many ways in which GPT-3 is being used both professionally and creatively. It has been used to generate many different types of media, such as poetry, stories, news reports and articles to name a few. Below, I have provides several examples highlighting actual projects or platforms that use GPT-3:
- Viable (https://www.askviable.com/) — platform that helps companies understand their customer feedback data using GPT-3 to provide insight by providing summaries of information collected. You can sign up for free.
- Fable Studio (https://fablesimulation.com/) — a simulation game using AI that brings NFT characters to life using GPT-3 to provide stories for the virtual beings.
- Functioning Chatbot (www.twilio.com) — GPT-3 can be used to create functioning programs like chatbots which users can use to get immediate answers to burning questions! You know, we are the generation of ‘immediate gratification’!
Artificial intelligence has a critical role in future applications. It can pretty much be used in anything. GPT-3 provides important information and knowledge useful for many applications, however it has a limited set of knowledge to retrieve from. Although upgrades will be necessary the full potential for utilizing GPT-3 has not been fully recognized. Many areas for future application include:
- Improving already existing customer service platforms
GPT-3 can be used to make existing platforms more effective and efficient in customer service platforms where human beings may not be needed. It has the ability to provide logical responses based on short term training and can provide quicker service speeding up long wait times for companies. Furthermore, it can be used to analyze customer surveys and feedback more effectively.
- Help people with disabilities utilize automated conversation programs better
It can be very useful in helping people communicate, especially persons with disabilities or challenges in communication. It can serve as an effective tool to help people communicate more effectively especially in times of emergencies or distress. It can also provide company to people in their times of need because of how similar it is to actual human response.
- Increase speed in creating programs/coding
GPT-3 can be used to fasten the coding process. Code that requires hundreds of thousands of lines of code can be done in little time. This can help programmers create important programs such as APIs, cryptographic programs, etc. This is also important for many other applications in the world to include cyber security,
banking industry, data systems, etc.
- Help improve cross-communication between people speaking different languages or people in different disciplines
Allowing people to better communicate when communication barriers such as those associated with language exist can be an excellent tool to help bring people together. Technology can be a great tool to bridge our perceived differences bringing more unity to our global community. It can be a great tool between scientists needing to communicate scientific ideas and concepts.
- Potentially help in the diagnosis of disease or disorders
GPT-3 can not only recognize the different functions of proteins, but also recognize quickly if a certain sequence contains a potential disorder. This can allow for great advancements in medicine saving many preventable deaths across the globe. It can also help doctors in making better determinations in diagnosing patients through the use of shared platforms and faster information processing.
- Can be used to make genomic sequencing more efficient
By expanding GPT-3’s neural network parameters, we can make it understand genomic sequencing quicker. Sequencing is a very arduous and tedious process, GPT-3 can make this process quicker and more efficient. It has potential for applications in the identification of new organisms or species, viruses during pandemics as well as in medicine, biology, etc. This has implications in better understanding biodiversity in a changing world.
I learned quite a bit conducting this research. It has been great learning about AI, machine learning, and specifically GPT-3. I hope you’ve enjoyed this reading as much as I have enjoyed preparing it! We can safely conclude that GPT-3 has many limitations that have already been realized. For example it is not 100% accurate in its responses. However, as with any advancements in technology — we aim to make it better than the previous, and as always — more work can be done! I beg to ask the question though — Do we really want to advance to a point where we no longer chat with one another but instead chat only with AI? Thank you.
