In June 2018, the metaverse was first announced and the world went crazy. This caused cryptocurrencies to go crazy and Elon Musk could not get off Twitter. What is truly the metaverse and its applications?
The pandemic transformed schooling to online and some succeeded and some did not, but many learned that they can optimize technology to its best. This is where I see the metaverse in play. You can teach students new lessons that would be near impossible to teach by hand. Imagine you wanted to learn about Oceanic plates, and you wanted to see how they move in the ocean. I am 99% sure that you do not want to take the risk and probably do not have the money to dive down 5 thousand feet to the bottoms and see the plates which are definitely covered by a lot of mud and other matter. Now imagine you had the metaverse at your hands. With the snap of your fingers, you can clearly see how the tectonic plates work and what they mean for things such as waves, mountains, and other terrains. Think about anatomy class, you can infuse yourself with how the brain is wired and how the neurons are being transferred throughout your body. The possibilities are endless and exciting. Isn’t VR, virtual reality, the same thing though?
How is the Metaverse different from virtual reality. So, virtual reality is basically where you are in your own little space that you can customize to yourself. This is Web 2.0 which has become completely social and is what the metaverse is trying to replace, but it won’t. Mark Zuckerberg said “The metaverse is a vision that spans many companies — the whole industry. You can think about it as the successor to the mobile internet…you can think about the metaverse as an embodied internet, where instead of just viewing content — you are in it. And you feel present with other people as if you were in other places, having different experiences that you couldn’t necessarily do on a 2D app or webpage, like dancing, for example.”(HowtoGeek.com). The metaverse is Web 3.0 which is going to be completely decentralized as Mr.Zuckerberg said. Going back to our personal example of having a student, VR could be an alternative to studying and understanding the sciences, but it is limited. Think about it like this; VR is your eyes, and the metaverse is your brain. You see things but the brain deciphers and makes it a reality that you can feel. That is the true power of the metaverse, we can visually feel how things are supposed to be.
Let’s talk about the fun aspect of the metaverse, which we all love. The best thing about it is that it is Minecraft but on steroids. You can construct homes, rollercoasters, crate businesses, and sell your products, which all exist in the blockchain. Now the downside to this is the fact that the matrix will exist. I know that in your brain that this is a bad thing, but when you look at it, you see that the human body will become useless as we depend on technology way more than we need to.
How can we control the “Matrix”? The best way that I think is to progress the development very slowly. Development is inevitable, but there need to be many restrictions and many safety measures so we do not genuinely recreate the matrix. Just imagine being plugged into a world where your life is dictated by a computer system.
Overall the development of AI is amazing but there needs to be so many restrictions so that people can enjoy it, but also they do not hurt themselves by overusing it.
